Frequently asked questions

Do I need any singing or performance experience to join the Gentlemen’s Choir?

No! All are welcome and encouraged to take the leap into self-discovery through singing.

WHAT IF I’M ALREADY A PROFICIENT SINGER?

Great! This is an opportunity to explore things you may not yet know. There will be opportunities for you to teach. And “To teach, is to learn twice”

IS THIS A CHOIR OR A MENS GROUP?

It’s both - and so much more. Whether you are joining to strengthen your musical journey or joining to deepen your connection in brotherhood, this is the right place.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DOES THE GENTLEMEN’S CHOIR SIGN AND PERFORM?

All sorts - much of our music and song selection is selected from ritual and mantras, as well as joyful, emotional, and energetic songs from all different genres and eras. We also bring in individual original works/songs each term to showcase the creativity of the group.

What does a typical session look like?

  • Vocal and breath warm ups

  •  Group drop-ins and sharing

  •  Learning and workshopping of songs

  •  Exploring themes of masculinity

  •  Sharing a meal together

WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE SESSIONS HELD?

Each session is held on the Tuesday of each week, in a private rehearsal studio in Plenty, Melbourne.

CAN I JOIN MID TERM?

Unfortunately not - the group bonds together from week 1 onwards and the container is closed from then on. This encourages accountability, intimacy, and privacy within each container.

I FEEL NERVOUS SINGING IN FRONT OF OTHERS, WHAT IF I FREEZE?

That’s totally normal. This space is built for that edge. Hence why we sing in unison. You’ll be gently guided, supported, and never forced. Many men have said this choir helped them overcome lifelong fear around voice and visibility.

WHAT IS THE ‘FIND YOUR VOICE’ RETREAT?

Around mid-journey, we gather for a 3-day immersive retreat. This is where the depth work really lands. We co-create original songs, dive into stories, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood.

WHAT IS THE PERFORMANCE?

The performance is where the training is put to the test. We finish the journey with a community performance night, where each man has the chance to witness their gifts publicly (not in the shower). It's not really a performance, it's a sharing.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Program fees cover facilitation, venue, retreat, and materials. The total cost is $1800 for a new man. Returning men will be discounted. Payment plans are available through Afterpay. Reach out if finances are a concern. We want this work to be accessible.
